CHAPTER 13

The Highly Feminine Man

SHE SAYS: “YOU’RE PAINFULLY SENSITIVE.”

HE SAYS: “I THOUGHT I WAS JUST SENSITIVE TO PAIN.”

CASE STUDY: LIAM

Liam came to see me on the recommendation of his good friend Max. Max and I had had a wonderful journey together and Max was eager for me to shed some light on his friend’s plight. The relationship between Max and Liam seemed to be in transition. “Jen, I just can’t be there for Liam anymore,” Max had confided to me. “He’s a great buddy of mine, but the issues he’s having now are becoming a little too large for me to deal with. Frankly, I can’t hear about them anymore. Besides, I just don’t know what to tell the guy. I feel for him, but I’m at a loss as to what to say.” I told Max that it would be my pleasure to assist his friend and be a sounding board for him. “Thanks, this guy needs a ‘girlfriend.’ I just can’t be that for him,” he said with a smile as he left my office.

Liam arrived for his appointment the following week. He was an immaculately dressed man. When I say immaculate, I mean not a hair out of place, shoes so shiny you could see your reflection in them. His suit was stylishly cut and obviously very expensive; cufflinks on his beautifully tailored shirt. I had not seen a man so elegantly dressed in a very long time. And when he greeted me Liam’s level of innate politeness made me feel like I had stepped into an age gone by. It was quite soothing in a strange sort of way. This man was so respectful that I could imagine there would be many instances in today’s world where he might feel a little out of place.

“Good morning, Liam, so very nice to meet you.” As I extended my hand to shake his, I almost felt as if he were going to kiss mine. The impression I got was that this man would never step out of line. I thought to myself, How unusual for our times, and how fascinating.

He sat rigidly upright on the sofa so I encouraged him to relax in whatever way he needed to. “I want you to feel at home here, that you can let go of any formality that might get in your way.” With that, I moved away, turning my back to him briefly as I turned on some music and got a pot of green tea. When I turned to face him again, Liam looked only marginally more comfortable, and I resigned myself to the fact that it would take a while for him to feel at ease in these surroundings.

Overwhelmed at the Office

“Liam, how can I help you? Max mentioned that you were feeling a little overwhelmed with some of your employees and there were also a few things going on at home. Is that correct?”

“Right on the money,” he responded. “Max has been a wonderful friend, but my issues have become so pressing that I feel I might have worn out our friendship.
